Labrador Retrievers

Labs are hailed as the most popular breed in America and the world, and it is no surprise why. The Lab is a versatile breed from hunting, agility to the model family dog. Gentle, agile, and intelligent the Lab is the ultimate furry friend for whatever you are looking for.

Health
Temperment

Labrador Retrievers have an estimated life-span of 10 to 14 years, with some living up to 19 years old. Just like any dog, Labs can be subjected to any illness, BUT they are a healthy breed with few major issues. Labs can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, cataracts and exercise induced collapse with old age. Lab owners must be careful and monitor the weight of their lab because they are prone to obesity.

Labrador Retrievers are known to be kind, outgoing and tractable. The even temperament of the lab makes it a great breed for a family (even with small children). Labs have a fantastic sense of smell, usually staying on a scent until the source is located, which is why you will see them as bomb detectors or used to find a missing person. A playful, adventurous, intelligent dog; the Lab is the perfect all around breed.

Exercise
Grooming

Labs do not require extensive grooming. A regular brushing will remove unnecessary hair and dirt. If a full cleaning is necessary it is best to use pet shampoo. Nails on a Lab should be cut regularly or whenever necessary. As with any dog, keep an eye on their ears to prevent infections or excessive wax build up.

Exercise is important for Labs since they tend to over eat. A Lab may exercise on their own, but walks, hikes and swimming are a great way to keep your Lab in shape. When swimming, avoid bodies of water with a current. With a puppy it is best to start with short walks and gradually lengthen them as they grow.
